06 CONCRETE AND PAVING
Built Around Good Design.
Good concrete work is rarely noticed — and that's the point. When a driveway, pathway, or entertaining area is well designed and properly constructed, it simply feels right. The surface does its job, water goes where it should, and the finish holds up year after year without fuss. What follows is an outline of the decisions, considerations, and possibilities that go into a well-resolved concrete and paving project — because the difference between a driveway and a well-designed driveway is significant.
Choosing the Right Concrete Finish.
The finish affects how a surface looks, feels underfoot, and performs over time. Broom finishes are practical and slip-resistant. Steel-float finishes are smoother, better suited to sheltered areas. Exposed aggregate adds texture and character. The right choice depends on location, use, and what the surrounding architecture calls for.
Paving & Natural Stone.
Sometimes pavers are the better answer. Travertine, basalt, bluestone, and porcelain each bring different qualities in terms of appearance, durability, and maintenance. Unlike poured concrete, individual pavers can be lifted and reset if underground services ever need accessing — a practical advantage worth considering early.
Drainage & Water Management
Water management is one of the most critical — and most overlooked — parts of any concrete or paving project. Where water goes once it hits a hard surface needs to be worked out before construction begins, not figured out afterwards. Without a proper plan, water pools against buildings, undermines base material, and creates problems that are slow to show up and expensive to fix.
